Every year, thousands of counterfeit electrical products end up on the shelves of legitimate stores across the United States. And a lot of these products simply aren't built to withstand the demands of the extra holiday decorations. The Consumer Product Safety Commission gets its hands on these products whenever it can. The CPSC tests products and finds that many counterfeit products can't stand up to even the most basic safety testing. When they discover a counterfeit or faulty product, the CPSC issues recalls of these products.
Even certified products can cause an overload. Electrical devices that are built to put out heat, like space heaters and hair dryers, tend to use more power than other devices. Devices like these may overload a circuit, especially one that's already reaching its maximum amperage allowance. Coupled with a faulty circuit breaker, this overload can cause the products to overheat and possibly catch fire."

Man dies in Darwin unit fire - Yahoo!7: "A man has died in a unit fire in suburban Darwin.
Emergency services were called to the unit at Tiwi in Darwin's northern suburbs at about 7am (CST) and found a 64-year-old man unconscious in a bedroom.
He was treated by paramedics and firefighters, but died at the scene.
Police are not treating the fire as suspicious.
Only minor damage was caused to the main living area of the unit."

Son unable to rescue parents as fire rips through Sydney home
No matter what the cause or if the smoke alarms were working please do your fire safety inspection and make sure all plug in electrical equipment is Tested and Tagged
Son unable to rescue parents as fire rips through Sydney home: "A Sydney man has died and his wife is in a critical condition after fire ripped through their single-storey brick home in the city's south.
Les Hopson, 65, died at hospital after being pulled from the fire at Engadine that started in his family's house at 3.30am on Wednesday.
His wife, Lita, remained in a Concord Hospital in intensive care with serious burns on Wednesday afternoon. The couple's son, Mark Hopson, 27, and his 23-year-old girlfriend managed to escape the blaze and have been discharged from hospital."

Police officer and bystander save trio from Sydney unit block fire
There are just too many residential house fires, one cannot be certain this early just how a fire starts, electrical faults are always in the mix.
Police officer and bystander save trio from Sydney unit block fire: "Sixty-year-old grandmother Maria Donati was cleaning her kitchen on Monday evening when she heard her neighbour Susan and her young son screaming "fire! fire!" from across the hallway.
She opened her front door to investigate and almost immediately was overcome by thick, black smoke and menacing flames.
Every few seconds I'd scream out 'are you OK' and she'd reply 'yes, yes'," he said. "It felt like she was in there for days
"My god, the hot air came to my face and the black smoke, I couldn't see anything, all I could see was fire coming through the carpet in front of me," she said. "It was everywhere."
